The Exploration Museum Announces the Beverly Turner Lynds Memorial Scholarship for Young Women in STEM

Húsavík, Iceland – November 19, 2024 – The Exploration Museum in Húsavík, Iceland, is proud to announce the establishment of the Beverly Turner Lynds Memorial Scholarship, a new program to empower and support young women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This scholarship, created in memory of the late Dr. Beverly Turner Lynds, an influential American astronomer and advocate for diversity in STEM, will offer annual funding for a promising young woman to participate in the Iceland GeoSpace training program hosted by the museum.

The Iceland GeoSpace program provides immersive field training, combining geology, astronomy, and hands-on scientific exploration. Located in one of the world’s most geologically active regions, the program offers young participants an opportunity to gain practical field experience in Iceland’s dynamic landscape. Since its inception in 2018, the program has welcomed 13 students, with a focus on inspiring young women to pursue careers in STEM. The scholarship will cover participation costs, making this unique experience more accessible to future explorers.

Dr. Lynds, who passed away on October 5, 2024, devoted her life to advancing astronomical research and fostering opportunities for underrepresented groups in science. Known for her groundbreaking cataloging of dark and bright nebulae and her dedication to science education, Dr. Lynds leaves behind an inspiring legacy of curiosity and resilience. The scholarship in her name reflects her passion for encouraging young women to “reach for the stars.”

“We are deeply honored to carry forward Dr. Lynds’ legacy by supporting the next generation of female scientists,” said Orly Orlyson, director of the Exploration Museum. “This scholarship is a meaningful tribute to her lifelong dedication to science and equity, and we are grateful to the Turner family for their generous support of this vision.”

The inaugural scholarship recipient will be announced in early 2025, and applications will soon be open to young women worldwide. For more information about the Beverly Turner Lynds Memorial Scholarship and the Iceland GeoSpace program, please visit our website ExplorationMuseum.com
